科恩兄弟的处女作，这部在84年花了80万美元，2个月就完成的影片，的确有些像希区柯克的犯罪故事。不过，影片呈现出的一些特征又把它和希区柯克作品截然分开。虽然预算很低，但显现出惊人的技术运用。这是向传统黑色片致敬的作品，充满了黑色幽默的笔触和峰回路转的情节设置。传统的家庭道德观念经过黑色处理，形成了典型的科恩风格，即敏锐的洞察力以及比传统黑色更夸张的手法。
